The number of mosques in the United States nearly tripled in a single generation. The US Mosque Survey, the standard count, found 962 in 1994 and 2,769 in 2020. The growth tracks the post-1990 immigration wave almost exactly. Roughly 54% of all mosques in the country were founded after 1990, and most new mosques were built by recent immigrant communities: Somalis, West Africans, Iraqis, Bosnians, Pakistanis, Indians, and Bangladeshis who reached a critical mass and established their own.

The total count keeps climbing, but the pace of new openings peaked in the 2000s. Even the slower recent rate works out to about 66 new mosques a year, more than one every week. No national registry tracks mosques currently under construction; the survey is taken once a decade.

No agency tracks mosque construction, so the national pace never shows up as a single number. The individual projects do. They are large, expensive, and permanent, and they cluster in the metros that absorbed the most immigration. Sources are listed at the bottom of the page.

How immigration remade the Muslim population

The Muslim population here looked nothing like this a generation ago. In 1970 it was small, mostly Black, mostly convert, and mostly born in the United States. Immigration from the Muslim world had barely begun. The census does not record religion, so no exact count exists for that year. The first national survey to measure it, in 1990, put Muslims at 0.3% of American adults.

Fifty years on, the population has tripled to 3.45 million, about 1.1% of the country, and the makeup has reversed. 58% of Muslim adults were born abroad. Pew traces almost all of the growth to two things: arrivals from abroad and larger families among Muslims already here.

The mosque data shows the same shift. Between 2010 and 2020 the number of converts recorded per mosque fell, and the Black American share of worshippers dropped from 24% to 16%. New mosques kept opening. The people filling them were increasingly Somali, Arab, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi.

What the map shows

The mosque map is an immigration map. The states with the most mosques are the states that received the most immigrants: New York, California, Texas, Florida, New Jersey, Illinois, and Michigan. The per-capita view tells the same story through smaller states with concentrated refugee resettlement, such as Minnesota, with its large Somali population.

The count rose from 962 in 1994 to 2,769 in 2020, and 54% of the total was founded after 1990. Each new building marks a community admitted from the Muslim world that grew large enough to fund its own mosque, in a period when nothing in immigration policy asked it to assimilate first.
